My original idea for this article was to write a review on the recent arrival of the stages power meter. However a quick internet search has proven that people much with much bigger reviewing reputations have already done so, see the MTBR review here and DC rainmakers review here. However what these guys fail to do is to go into any sort of details about how to properly make use of it, as such the goal of this article is to present a range of ideas for the proper integration of a power meter into a mountain biking training program.
I wanted to write this article for a number of reasons not the least of which is an upcoming trip to Nepal. During the trip to Nepal I am hoping to be able to experiment on myself and see how my body copes with this real world altitude scenario. Whilst not being able to follow exact scientific principles I am hoping to gather some data on 5km running performance over a 3 week period with altitudes ranging from sea level to over 5000m. Firstly however what I will endeavor to do in this article is to cover the basics of altitude physiology training and adaption as it applies to cyclists and endurance athletes.
My previous article sports testing for cycling an overview outlined the background and benefits of testing for cycling.
In this article I am going to take a more in depth look a two commonly misunderstood tests of aerobic fitness. Whilst similar these two tests are also distinctly different and provide a coach or athlete different information on an athlete’s physiology and performance capacity.
